Speakers at Art during crisis: session on Iran

NL Hossein Zoghi is een Iraanse journalist, theaterregisseur en acteur. Hossein is al jaren actief in de underground theaterscene in Iran. Zijn voorstellingen gaan voornamelijk over gevoelige politieke en maatschappelijke kwesties in Iran en het Midden-Oosten, waarbij vaak verboden Iraanse sociaal-politieke iconen worden geportretteerd. Hij streeft ernaar traditionele Iraanse theatertradities in zijn werken te verwerken. Vanwege zijn focus op politieke inhoud, met name een voorstelling over Mohammad Mossadegh en de Iraanse staatsgreep van 1953, werd Hossein uitgesloten van officiële theateractiviteiten in Iran. Desondanks bleef hij verschillende undergroundvoorstellingen opvoeren in Teheran. Hossein heeft zowel in zijn theaterwerk als in zijn journalistieke loopbaan de druk van censuur en verboden aan den lijve ondervonden. Momenteel is hij een ‘Artist at Risk’ en verblijft hij in het kader van het Artists at Risk (AR)-residentieprogramma in No Callarem, Catalonië.

ENG Hossein Zoghi is an Iranian journalist, theatre director, and actor. For years, Hossein has been active in the underground theatre scene in Iran. His performances primarily address sensitive political and social issues in Iran and the Middle East, often featuring portraits of forbidden Iranian socio-political icons. He strives to incorporate traditional Iranian performance customs into his works. Due to his focus on political content, particularly a performance concerning Mohammad Mossadegh and the 1953 Iranian Coup d’état, Hossein was banned from official theatre activities in Iran. Nevertheless, he continued to stage several underground works in Tehran. Hossein has severely experienced the pressure of censorship and banning in both his theatre work and his journalism career. He is currently an Artist at Risk, residing under the Artists at Risk (AR) residency programme in No Callarem, Catalonia.
