How to pass on and document your art practice

Ensuring that artistic practices continue to thrive within a community is not a given. Certainly not when the driving forces behind them cease their activities or when, for example, they are no longer there themselves.

During this event, we provide a sharing platform for good practices, examples and cases, lessons learnt and potential strategies for passing on art. Flanders Arts Institute organises this event in collaboration with service organisations from the cultural heritage sector.

Roundtable discussions

Passing on an artistic practice

How do you keep a (small) group of stakeholders actively involved in your artistic practice? Who is part of that group, who is not, and when can someone call themselves a representative or a part of an art form or practice? How do you practice and share processes, methodologies, creations, technological skills and knowledge with colleagues?

Documentation

Artistic practices can be documented and, in this way, passed on. Documentation can even be a part of the creative process. How do you archive your work? Who are you archiving it for, and what power dynamics are at play in the process? What considerations do you take into account? What do you safe, and what do you discard?

Using documentary material

How do you make your archive easy to find? How do you encourage people to use the material in their artistic practice? How do you keep a community around it alive? Who can reuse the material, and is it open for outside use?

What should not be overlooked?

Basic conditions can be overlooked: moral rights, copyright, financial contracts, agreements, ... What about projects that are banned in a country at war? What do we do when the medium is completely unreliable?
