Art during crisis: session on Sápmi

Through monthly digital sessions, Art during crisis explores the role of art in times of crisis, such as (international) resistance, solidarity and hospitality.

On 7 May our conversation focuses on the Sámi, the inhabitants of Sápmi, an internationally recognised indigenous community.

Focus on Sápmi

The Sámi, the inhabitants of Sápmi, are internationally recognised as an indigenous community. Their territory was divided by the establishment of the national borders of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. The states set in motion a centuries-long process of assimilation and colonisation.

Although the Sámi have international recognised rights, they still have to fight for self-determination. Climate change, political and social discrimination, and the appropriation of land for industrial development threaten their homeland and culture.

Speakers

  • Anders Sunna is a Northern Sámi artist from a reindeer-herding family in Kieksiäisvaara, in the Swedish part of Sápmi. Sunna’s politically charged artworks narrate the history of the violence and oppression against the Sámi people, specifically addressing his family’s five-decade-long struggle for their right and acknowledgement to be forest reindeer herders.
  • Katarina Pirak Sikku, is based in Jokkmokk, the Swedish side of Sápmi. She is most known for her research work in the archive of Uppsala, the archive of the former Swedish Institute of Racial Biology. She has processed the legacy of racial biological research in exhibitions and in her artistic practice. She has been digging in this archive to find the voice of the Saamis.
