Expanded practices: performing arts community of practice
Flanders Arts Institute invites artists and art workers from the performing arts sector to the Expanded Practices community of practice. During three sessions, along with 20 participants, we explore the thresholds, needs and wishes for the development of sustainable practices within the field.
Expanded Practices
For these sessions, we are looking for organisations, art workers and artists who are trying to approach the performing arts sector in a different way. Practices that look just differently at the existing structures and dynamics within our field, and try to make way for new forms of working and developing.
Expanded Practices focuses on the exchange of knowledge of these practices: over three sessions, we encourage good practices and outline concrete steps to share with the wider performing arts sector.
How do we build ethical forms of collaboration – both in front of and behind the scenes, from conceptual to practical functions? What does a sustainable (inter)national working relationship and exchange look like? How do we create multi-voiced practices? And how do we strengthen an artistic field that focuses on creative development rather than product-oriented dynamics?
Do you want to work on the questions above, do you recognise your work in this or are you interested in how you can develop such a practice? Then register and start working with us.
For who?
All positions and disciplines within the performing arts are welcome.
The community of practice is limited to 20 participants, who will attend the three sessions.
Programme
During these sessions, we will engage with participants' needs and interests, while working towards some objectives:
- Session #1 – state of the art: what practices exist, what good practices can we encourage? What are the practical challenges and needs?
- Session #2 – utopia as reality: what is our wish for the performing arts sector? What is the dream scenario we want to achieve, and how do we do it? Where lay our responsibilities, inidividually and as a sector, and what is the government's responsibility?
- Session #3 – concrete steps for the future: in the final session, we try to build concrete lines. How do we pass on the themes discussed to the sector?
Practical
Session #1: 23 April, wpZimmer (Gasstraat 90, 2060 Antwerp)
Session #2: 23 September, Ghent (location tbc)
Session #3: 2 December, Brussels (location tbc)
Each session will take place from 10am to 4pm, including a vegetarian lunch. The working language is Dutch and/or English, and depends on the participants. Please indicate in the registration form which languages you are comfortable in.
For freelance artists (who are not on the payroll of an arts organisation and for whom participation is therefore unpaid), Flanders Arts Institute provides a volunteer allowance for your participation and reimbursement of your travel expenses.
20 participants
We organise these sessions with 20 participants. The call is open to anyone active in the performing arts, regardless of function or discipline.
If we receive more than 20 applications, we will make a selection with a representation of different profiles and disciplines. Therefore, in the application form we ask for your motivation, experience and interest around the subject.
This selection is made by two of Flanders Arts Institute's colleagues: Julia Reist ((inter)national sector support and promotion of the performing arts) and Sofie Joye (innovation and development based on performing arts expertise). They will be assisted in this by an external colleague, and will contact the participants by 10 April at the latest.
