Lunch Talks - Art and AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly become part of our daily lives, and therefore also part of our (artistic) practice. What does that mean for artists and designers? How can you, as an artist, use AI in your practice? How do you approach this in an ethical way? And who is the owner?

Whenever a new technology emerges, we ask ourselves whether it will replace the artist. How ethical are these techniques? What is creativity? And who owns that creativity? Who can claim the copyright? Artificial intelligence places these existing questions in a new context today.

Joins us on Thursday 5 March for a new Lunch Talk about art and AI and ask Bruce Vansteenwinkel your questions.

Lunch Talks

During Flanders Arts Institute's Lunch Talks, experts and professionals provide you with information and advice on various topics. Discover all the sessions in our calendar.

Bruce Vansteenwinkel

Due to circumstances, Bruce Vansteenwinkel will be unable to attend. He will be replaced on 5 March by lecturer, visual artist and musician Frédéric Baert.

Bruce Vansteenwinkel is a Brussels-based designer and lecturer who works in the fields of branding, identity, and visual culture. He develops visual identities and design systems for cultural institutions, public organisations, and brands operating in a wide range of social contexts, from museums and opera houses to international companies.

In addition to his role as senior designer at Base Design and his freelance practice, Bruce works with clients such as Kanal Centre Pompidou, La Monnaie / De Munt, HBO Max, and Apple.

Bruce teaches and coordinates programs at various universities and regularly gives lectures and seminars on how identity takes shape through images, language, and design. In recent years, his work has expanded to include AI and image creation. As part of Base Design's AI research team, he explores new tools, taking a critical look at how AI reproduces visual norms, prejudices and ideas about authorship.
