Sector day Early Music

In September, Flanders Arts Institute published the Landscape Sketch of the Arts 2025, a comprehensive analysis of trends and developments in the professional arts landscape in Flanders and Brussels. This publication was the result of an extensive process, during which we also gathered input from the early music sector.

This publication serves as the basis for Flanders Arts Institute's future work. Together with the sector and policymakers, we will take a solution- and action-oriented approach to address the identified bottlenecks and opportunities.

Sector day Early Music

As part of this follow-up process, we are organising this sector day: together, we will bring together discipline-specific questions and sector-wide insights. We will focus specifically on one of the most important themes from the Landscape Sketch: development.

Development is a broad and meaningful concept that came up regularly in the preliminary phase and often took different forms. Based on a short presentation of the Landscape Sketch and four working sessions, we will take a closer look at what development means for early music and how we can support each other in this.

Sessions

Session 1: artistic development
What is artistic development in early music? We explore the role of collective and individual creativity and look at how the sector can support each other in developing artistic identity and autonomy.

Session 2: development in the context of production and presentation (discussion + input)
During this session, we delve into concert practice. How do we develop our productions and presentations? How do we take the time and space to innovate our activities and tailor them to different audiences? And how do we work with our partners and clients?

Session 3: career development (discussion + input)
In this working session, we focus on career development, both at the beginning of a career and in later stages. We explore where support for this development can be found or created.

Session 4: field development - landscape management (discussion)
A strong ecosystem creates strong players. In this working session, we will look together for ways to strengthen this ecosystem by sharing and circulating knowledge, expertise and networks, both commercially and artistically.
